Most music enthusiasts recognize Kathy Bee as the sultry singer who performs in concerts and at special events. However Ms. Bee wears many hats. Not only is she a singer/songwriter, she is a musical playwright. On October 21, 2011 at 7:30 PM, we are showcasing a condensed version of Kathy Bee’s musical The Tin Can at The Woman’s Club of Hollywood.
The Tin Can is a musical that touches the heart. It is the story of a homeless street child (Peter), who is hired by a recluse, eccentric painter (Harry), to model for a book cover, while holding The Tin Can. When the book is released the child is recognized by the mother and reunited. Harry is arrested and goes to jail for kidnapping; the media has a field day; all the while sales of the book skyrocket. The real truth about the kidnapping is disclosed on a TV talk show. Harry is exonerated and released but becomes more withdrawn until he receives a letter, in The Tin Can, from Peter.
Not only are the songs memorable, moving and to the point, Kathy Bee believes that the message in The Tin Can serves as metaphor about the Homeless, a dear subject to Ms. Bee.
“When The Tin Can was brand new, it was important and had value. Then it became unwanted, discarded, thrown away into the trash. Through the eyes of a child and a visionary, The Tin Can, became the driving force that ultimately mended a broken man and reunited a family…The Tin Can became valuable again!
People who have read the script and listened to the songs are excited about the possibilities. Many have suggested some off-Broadway venues, while others say that this is definitely a Broadway production.
Although Kathy Bee’s 1st love is the theater, she yearns for The Tin Can to also be produced as a Full Feature Film. Bee strongly believes that all the elements are there as well as the heart and soul that it takes to capture an audience from both mediums…theater and film. Time will tell what will ultimately take place.
